Is it safe to eat Gar?

I seen at least 12 gar while fishing today and it was pretty awesome because I only seen one once back when I was a kid. I tried and tried to catch one without any luck. I heard that a gar bite is really dangerous because of the bacteria in their mouth... If I ever do catch one of these, are they safe to eat? Also, any pointers or tips on how to catch one would be great. Thanks!
